The Grandchildren of Patrick Barrett and Bridget Heggerty

Introduction

The Barretts’ originated in Ireland. John Barrett married Margaret Nelson. They went on to have the following children:

  • Anthony (b 1802 in Ireland)
  • John (b c 1811 County Mayo, Ireland),
  • Patrick (b 1814 Derryhillagh, Crossmolina, County Mayo, Ireland),
  • Michael (b 1816 Derryhillagh, Crossmolina, County Mayo, Ireland),
  • James (b c 1826 in Ireland)
  • Catherine (b 1831 in Ireland)

The Patrick above who was born in 1814 at Derryhillagh, Crossmolina, County Mayo, Ireland married  Bridget Haggerty ; they moved from Ireland to Scotland sometime between 1842 and 1851 and we first see them in Scotland at the taking of the 1851 Census. There is a strong likelihood that they had other children born in Ireland but these are the ones we know of that either came over from Ireland, or were born in Scotland:

  • Ann Barrett born c 1837 In Ireland
  • Michael Barrett born c 1842 In Ireland
  • Mary Barrett born 19 Feb 1852
  • Richard Barrett born 17 Oct 1854
  • Bridget Barrett born 12 Oct 1856
  • Patrick Barrett born 1858

The story of the lives of Patrick Barrett and Bridget Haggerty is told in another sub-page of this site which you can find here but I did not want to complicate that narrative with detailed information about the children of their children. Of these children, Ann went on to marry John Judge and have twelve children, seven of which died under three-years of age; Michael seems never to have married; Mary married twice to James McKinney and Francis Hanratty and had three McKinney children and six Hanratty children; Richard married Flora Morrison and had five children; Bridget married Edward Conroy and had two children and Patrick died aged 20 months. In the course of researching these people, I came across random bits of information about their children and I summarise these next.

The Children of Ann Barrett and John Judge

Ann Barrett married John Judge 2 Oct 1855 and their first child was born the following year. In the main narrative of Ann’s parents, Patrick Barrett and Bridget Haggerty which you can see here, I mentioned the poor survival rate of the children of their daughter, Ann, whose child-bearing included a consecutive run of five children born between 1863 and 1872, none of whom lived beyond three years of age. The following table illustrates the births. Those that are in bold type died aged three or under.

As we have seen, Michael was the only child of the family when the census was taken in 1861 when the family had moved from Goosedubs and were then living at Laws Back Land, Clyde, Glasgow. At the 1871 Census the family are living at 20 Margaret Place, Clyde, Glasgow and Michael is 11-years-old; he now a sister for him, Ellen, aged 10. We have seen that the reason there were not more children was the consecutive run of five deaths of children aged three or under born between 1863 and 1872. At the 1881 Census Michael’s parents were living at 12 Thistle Street, Hutchesontown but he is not recorded as being present. He would have been aged around 21. Our next record of Michael is at his marriage to Janet Stewart on 2 Aug 1886

I have not been able to find any children born to this couple and could not find them in the 1891 Census either. It is not until 1897 that I have found reference to him as a witness at the death of his sister, Helen, who had married Alexander Morris in that year. He gives his address as 40 Cowcaddens Street, Glasgow.

Marriage of Michael Judge and Jean Phillips bef 1921

I could not find a death for his wife, Janet Judge or Stewart but it seems he remarried to Jean Philips some time before 1921 but, I could not find a record of this marriage anywhere. I could not find any children either. That Michael was married to both these women is confirmed (seemingly) by his death registration.

It is interesting to note that Michael Judge is a “commercial traveller” and if we wanted to pursue this further, other countries could be a consideration. Be that as it may, I am still surprised that neither of his marriages has come to light and that no children have been found for either marriage.

Ellen was born too late in the year to be recorded in the 1861 Census but she is present at the 1971 Census when the family were living at Margaret Place, Clyde, Glasgow. The two children present are Michael, now 11-years-old and Ellen aged 10. We have seen that the reason there were not more children was the consecutive run of five deaths of children aged three or under born between 1863 and 1872. The Farquhars at the 1881 Census – 12 Thistle Street, Hutchesontown, Glasgow

It seems that the couple moved into Ann’s parent’s house at 12 Thistle Street soon after their marriage as they are recorded there at the taking of the 1881 Census. They are actually recorded as Ferichers but that is an obvious writing down of what was heard with no inkling about the spelling since it is surely Farquhar. Ellen is there, aged 19 and so is Patrick, also aged 19 and a blacksmith, just as Ann’s father is. Anne’s mother and father are there and also Ellen’s new sisters Margaret (7) and Ann (2). I have already mentioned that between the 1871 and 1881 censuses, Anne’s mother had borne five children in a row who all died aged three or under. Margaret was the child that broke that run but, even then, there was a child, Richard, who was born in 1886 and died in 1887. The Ann that is in the household came after him.

I could find no other reference to any children that this couple might have had and I found no death for him. I found very little out about Ellen/Helen at this period. There was a Helen Judge who was a sponsor at the baptism of Francis Jas Henretty in 1889 but I cannot be certain that this is her using her maiden name; it may have been a sister to John Judge. I have not been able to find her at the 1891 Census either when her parents were living at 18 South Shamrock Street, Hutchesontown with their daughters, Margaret, Ann and the 8-year old May. The next time we do meet her is at her marriage to Alexander Morris.

Despite being married twice, Ellen was only 35 when she died. I have not found any children of either marriage except John Farquhar who was born when Ellen was about 22. It is of interest here that the informant was Ellen’s brother, Michael. One might have expected it to have been her husband but not so. He, in fact, lived for a lot longer, not dying until 1931

I will not go into any detail here about the children who did not survive to maturity as I covered this in the main narrative of the Barrett family. So here I miss out James (b 1863), Bridget (b 1866), Patrick (b 1868), Mary Ann (b 1870) and Ann (b 1872); none of these children lived beyond three years of age. The next child fared somewhat differently, though and lived to be 94, only dying in 1969.

Margaret Judge at the 1881, 1891 and 1911 Censuses

At the 1881 Census, Margaret is to be found as a seven-year-old at the family home at 12 Thistle Street. Apart from her parents, there is her older sister, Ellen, and her husband Patrick who had just been married a short while before. They are recorded as Ferichers instead of Farquhars. Her younger sister, Ann, is also in the household.

At the 1891 Census, Margaret is to be found as a seventeen-year-old “tobacco worker” living at the family home which is now 18 South Shamrock Street, Hutchesontown. She is the eldest child in the household and, apart from her parents, there is her younger sisters Ann (12) and Mary (8) who are both scholars

At the 1901 Census, Margaret is to be found as a twenty-five-year-old “Bond warehouse forewoman” – she seems to have lost a few years – living at the family home which is now 118 Rose Street, Hutchesontown. She is the eldest “child” in the household and, apart from her parents, there is also her younger sister, Mary, who is now eighteen and a “shirt machinist”. The household is rounded off with John Farquhar, grandson, aged 17 and a “telephone linesman”. He is, of course, the son of Margaret’s sister, Ellen who married Patrick Farquhar in 1880 and had their son, John, in 1883. We have seen above that there is a lot of uncertainty about that marriage and even the following marriage of Ellen to Alexander Morris. In Any case, she died in 1897 when John would only have been about 13-14 years-old. It is entirely possible that this was when he went to live with his grand-parents.

It must have seemed like Margaret was unlikely to ever marry but she did so in 1909 when she was surely thirty-five ( a year older than her husband) not the twenty-nine she is registered as!

There are some interesting aspects to this census return. I do not know who Ann Judge is. Obviously there is a temptation to think that it is a relation of Annie’s but it is hard to see how. I looked at the census return for Ann Judge who is a shopkeeper here and found an interesting entry for an Ann Judge, a fish dealer but it wasn’t convincing enough. However, the address is 51 Glebe Street and Annie’s second child had another address in Glebe Street as her home address at her baptism. That is also odd because that child, Annie Galvin, was born 24 March 1901 and the census was taken on 21 March, so one would expect her to be with her mother. Despite these difficulties, I am convinced that this is Annie Glavin or Judge and the one-year-old boy is her son, James.

Mary Judge 1891, 1901 and 1911 Censuses

At the 1891 Census the family home is now 18 South Shamrock Street, Hutchesontown. Mary is the youngest member of the household aged just eight. Her older sister, Ann, who is aged 12 is a scholar as she is. The eldest daughter, Margaret, in a “tobacco worker”. Her father is a 60-year-old “blacksmith”; her mother is a 46-year-old “old clothes dealer”

At the 1901 Census the family home is now 118 Rose Street, Hutchesontown. Mary is now an eighteen-year-old “shirt machinist”. Her older sister, Maggie, is a 25-year-old “bond warehouse forewoman” and there is a grandson of her parents, John Farquhar, who is the child of her sister Helen (see above). Her father is aged 72 and unemployed; her mother is aged 60.

At the 1911 Census the family are still living at 118 Rose Street, Hutchesontown but Mary is the only child living with her parents. She is aged 28 but has no occupation; perhaps she looks after her parents. Her father is now seventy-seven and a retired horseshoe maker. Her mother is aged 72.

Mary’s father would die that same year, 1911, and her mother died a couple of years after that.

Bridget McKinney at the Censuses

1881 Census
As we have seen, Bridget McKinney was present in the household of her grandparents, Partick Barrett and Bridget Haggerty at the taking of the 1881 Census. She, her sister and her mother are all recorded as McKennas not McKinneys. The grandparents lived at 201 Rutherglen Road, Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. She is there, aged six, with her sister Mary (2) and her widowed mother, Mary McKinney or Barrett who is a “millworker” in a cotton factory. Oddly, I could not find a death for James McKinney anywhere. The household is quite mixed because, apart from Mary and her daughters, Bridget and Mary, there is also another sister who is married; this is Bridget Barrett, now Conroy, and her husband, Edward Conroy who is also there. Confusingly they are recorded as Kinroys rather than Conroys. At the head of the household is Patrick Barrett, aged 70, and a “roadsman”, his wife, Bridget, and two unmarried sons, uncles to Bridget, ; Michael and Richard Barrett.

1891 Census
At the 1891 Census Bridget is still in the household of her grandparents at Back Stair 64 Rose Street, Hutchesontown. Her uncles, Richard and Michael still live with their parents but now there are two Conroy grandchildren in the house – Catherine and Michael. I have no idea of what happened to their parents, Bridget Barrett and Edward Conroy, who we saw at the 1881 Census; they seem to have disappeared. It is also notable that, although Bridget is with her grandparents, her sister, Mary, was with her mother at 14 Back Academy Square where she lived with her second husband, Francis Hanratty who she married in 1866. I consider all this in detail in the main narrative of the children of Patrick Barrett and Bridget Haggerty.

Oddly, I could not find a death for James McKinney anywhere. The household is quite mixed because, apart from Mary and her daughters, Bridget and Mary, there is also another sister who is married; this is Bridget Barrett, now Conroy, and her husband, Edward Conroy who is also there. At the head of the household is Patrick Barrett, aged 70, and a “roadsman”, his wife, Bridget, and two unmarried sons, uncles to Bridget, ; Michael and Richard Barrett.

1891 Census
At the 1891 Census Mary, unlike her sister, Bridget who is at the household of the Barrett grandparents at Back Stair 64 Rose Street, Hutchesontown, is to be found with her mother and her new husband, Francis Hanratty whom she had married in 1886. Since their marriage Mary’s mother had had two children with Francis Hanratty; Annie, aged 3, and Francis, aged just 1. They lived at 14 Back Academy Square, Bothwell. Mary is recorded as Mary Hanratty but she was James McKinney’s daughter. Of course there may be nothing more to it than a recorder’s error and one of the girls staying with her grandparents for a short period. Against this theory, however, it that Shotts is not close to Gorbals! I consider all this in detail in the main narrative of the children of Patrick Barrett and Bridget Haggerty.

1901 Census
At the 1901 Census, Mary is with the Hanratty’s who have moved to 14 New Square, Mossend, Bellshill, Lanarkshire. She is recorded as being the daughter of Mary Hanratty, widow. Francis Hanratty died 18 Aug 1900 so Mary Hanratty (or McKinney or Barrett) is how the head of the household at thirty-nine years of age. Mary is now 20 and is a “factory worker”. Also in the household are Francis Hanratty (11), Ann Hanratty (12), and Agnes Hanratty (6) – all Scholars.

Later that year Mary McKinney (or Hanratty) married John Robertson; they married 12 Jul 1901 in Glasgow.

The Children of Mary Barrett and Francis Hanratty

I do not know what happened to James McKinney. I have not found a death for him yet but at the 1881 Census, when Mary is found at the household of her parents at 201 Rutherglen Road, Hutchesontown, she is said to be a 36-year-ols widow and a “charwoman”. Her daughters, Bridget and Mary are with her (they are recorded as McKennas no McKinneys) which seems clear enough. In any case, five years later, she remarried to Francis Hanratty on 16 Jul 1886. A description of the details of her early life, both marriages and her life in general can be seen on the main page on this site that deals with the narrative of her parents, Patrick Barrett and Bridget Haggerty. In this sub-page we are only concerned with the children she had. We saw above that she had two surviving children out of three that she had by James McKinney but she went on to have another five or six (see below for an explanation) children with Francis Hanratty. Ann was born 23 May 1884, Francis James was born 9 Mar 1890, Owen or John, born 16 Nov 1891, Agnes born 15 May 1894 and John born 3 Sep 1895. It looks like, after their marriage in 1886, Mary and Francis moved from Glasgow to the Bellshill area of Lanarkshire – about 14 miles from Glasgow; I assume for employment reasons. All the children I know of, that they had, were born in Mossend, Bellshill, Lanarkshire

Ann Hanratty at the Censuses

1891 Census
Here we find Francis Hanratty as a 36-year-old Steel smelter born Ireland. Mary is aged 21 and is a “steel worker’s wife” The children in the household are:  Mary Hanratty, daughter aged 12. This child was from her mother’s previous marriage to James McKinney. Mary’s brother, James, had died in infancy but her sister, Bridget, who is now aged 16 is to be found at the taking of this census in Mary’s parent’s household at Back Stair 64 Rose Street, Hutchesontown where she is recorded as Bridget McKinney, “tobacco worker”. The children Mary has had with Francis are daughter Annie, a 3-year-old born Mossend Lancashire and son, Francis Hanratty, aged 1 also born Mossend.

1901 Census
Ann is present in the family home at 14 New Square, Mossend, Bellshill at the taking fo the 1901 Census which was taken on 31 Mar 1901. Her father had died of “syncope of the heart” on 18 August 1900, so Mary’s mother is now a 39-year-old widow. In the household with her is her son Francis (11) and daughters Ann (12) and Agnes (6), all of whom are scholars. The last child in the household in Anne’s half-sister, Mary, who is a 20-year-old factory worker. She is actually the child from her mother’s first marriage but is recorded here as Hanraty not McKinney.

The children Mary has had with Francis are daughter Annie, a 3-year-old born Mossend, Lancashire and son, Francis Hanratty, aged 1 also born Mossend.

1901 Census
Francis is present in the family home at 14 New Square, Mossend, Bellshill at the taking of the 1901 Census which was taken on 31 Mar 1901. His father had died of “syncope of the heart” on 18 August 1900, so Francis’s mother is now a 39-year-old widow. Francis is aged 11 and in the household also are his sisters Ann (12) and Agnes (6), all of whom are scholars. The last child in the household in Francis’s half-sister, Mary, who is a 20-year-old factory worker. She is actually the child from her mother’s first marriage but is recorded here as Hanratty not McKinney.

1911 Census
I have not looked to find Francis Hanratty (or Hanretty) at the 1911 Census but I believe I have found a record of Francis James Hanretty dying in the Great War

The next child is a little confusing. I suspect that the child registered as Owen Hanratty was the same child that was baptised as John Hanratty – unless they are twins! However, I can find a baptism for only one of these names and a birth registration for only one of these names

Agnes Hanratty at the Censuses

1901 Census
By the time of the 1901 Census, the father of the household is dead – he died of “syncope of the heart” aged 40. Her mother is now the head of the household at 14 New Square, Mossend, Bellshill, Lanarkshire. Her mother is 39-years-old. Agnes is the youngest of the Hanrarry children at six-years old. She has an older brother, Francis (11) and sister Ann (12) as well as a half-sister, Mary, who is now 20 and is a “factory worker”. She is a child of her mother’s first marriage to James McKinney even though she is called Hanratty here.

We encounter Agnes again but it is not a happy story. On 14 Nov 1905 her mother entered Omoa Poorhouse with acute pneumonia; she died there a week later of “acute pneumonia 7 days). In her death registration she is described as a 42-year old pauper. This left her children as seen at the 1901 Census of 14 New Square in the following situation. (25), Ann (17), Francis (16) and Agnes, herself, just 11.

Summary of the Children of Mary Barrett or McKinney or Hanratty

When Mary Hanratty or McKinney or Barret died in Omoa Poorhouse on 14 Nov 1905 she left behind only two living children from each of her marriages. Bridget McKinney would have been aged about 31; she died in1921 in Glasgow and seems never to have married. Mary McKinney would have been aged about 27 years-old. She had married John Robertson in 1901 but did not outlive her mother by much dying of phthisis aged 26 in 1906. Francis James Hanratty would have been nearly sixteen in 1905. He died in the Great  War and was buried in France in 1915. Agnes Hanratty, as we have seen, was left a pauper and is recorded as having moved to Govan to live with her brother after her mother’s death.

There is a clear gap between 1914 when Richard was born and 1919 when Janet was born; the obvious conclusion is that he went to war shortly after they were married/ I have not looked into this as yet.

Richard Barrett in 1927

Richard was the informant at his father’s death registration just as he was at his mother’s. Richard senior died 27 Apr 1927. He died in hospital but his usual address was still 237 South Wellington Street, Glasgow. Richard junior gave his address as 8 Sandyfaulds Street, Glasgow.

Death of Richard Barrett

I have not really been able to find out much more abut Richard; it would have been too time-consuming. I did find a possibly entry in RD Glasgow South for a Richard Barrett dyong in 1968 age 76 (644 / 1 / 919) but I can’t be sure that it is him. It would be possible to find out a lot about Janet Feron. I believe that she may have been the daughter of Kames Feron and Catherine Murphy (see here) but looking at her marriage to Richard Barrett would tease this out a bit. If she was then this census could be her family in 1901.

The McCues at the 1921 Census

These were the only children I could find that I could be sure about. I have had a bit of a problem reconstructing this family. Although the only children I could find were Elizabeth b 1914 and Susan b 1915, the only likely candidates at the 1921 Census was a household of two people of the correct name and age but with no children with them in the household, whilst declaring that they had three dependent children aged 1, 3 and 7. There were actually a few possible options if you looked at births where the mother’s maiden name was not recorded but, in the end, I settled for just recording what I know.

The McCues after 1915

I could not find any further convincing documentation about any of this family apart from that noted above. At this level of my research these are really the outer limits and unless I find a future need to delve deeper there is a certain point where, if the information, does not fall into place relatively easily, I have to let it go and get on with more direct ancestors.

In Scotland, “marriage by warrant of the sheriff substitute” refers to a specific type of irregular marriage, also known as a marriage by declaration. This type of marriage occurred when a couple declared themselves married before two witnesses, and then obtained a warrant from the sheriff substitute to have the marriage officially registered. This process was quicker and cheaper than a traditional church wedding, especially before civil marriages were introduced in 1940

Here we see Mary’s father, Richard Barrett, as a nearly sixty-seven-year-old Cloth Lapper working for James Park. His daughter, Elizabeth is no longer in the household; she had married James McCue in 1913. Mary, is 22-years-old and is employed in home duties. As we saw above, she married Edward McGuire 19 Aug 1919 and this is surely the Edward McGurie, “unemployed carter” listed as a lodger here. Also, surely, the child, Edward McGurie, is her son even though both are listed simply as lodgers. We might have expected the elder Edward to be listed as son-in-law. The household also has Mary’s sister, Marion, who is now aged twenty and she is, like Mary, occupied with “home duties”; three years after this census was taken she would marry Charles Neil in St John’s Chapel in Portugal Street.

I do not have any more on this family at the moment. It might be worth looking at electoral registers to try to tie them in with church records or similar but I stopped when I found a death for Mary.

I could not find the record of the marriage noted above but I did find one in indexes to civil registrations for 1919 in RD Anderston; see below.

Marion Barrett in the Censuses 1901, 1911, 1921

1901 Census
As we have seen in the page on this site concerning Marion’s parents , which you can see here, the family were living at 64 Rose Street, Gorbals, Glasgow. Her father, Richard, is, as ever, a Cloth Lapper, and is aged 42. Flora, his wife, is 37. Richard, junior, is the eldest child at 10-years-old and he is a scholar. The daughters are Eliza(abeth) (6), Mary (2) and Marion is the newest addition to the family at just 3 months old.

1911 Census
Marion’s mother, Flora, had died in 1909. At this census they are living at They live at 138 South Wellington Street, Glasgow. Elizabeth’s father is now a 56-year-old widowed “clothlapper”. Richard junior is now 18 and a “linesman” for a telephone company. 138 South Wellington Street, Glasgow. Elizabeth is now 16 and is “at home”, presumably meaning that she is running the household. Mary is now 12 and Marion is 10; both are scholars.

1921 Census
Marion’s father, Richard is now nearly sixty-seven and still a “loth lapper” He works for James Park. His daughter, Elizabeth is no longer in the household; she had married James McCue in 1913. His daughter, Mary, is 22-years-old and is employed in home duties. Marion is now aged twenty and is, like her sister, Mary, occupied with “home duties”; three years after this census was taken she would marry Charles Neil in St John’s Chapel in Portugal Street.

The Children of Marion McMillan Barrett and Charles Neil

As we get to children of the later grandchildren of Patrick Barrett and Bridget Heggerty the details get harder to see as they become unavailable online due to closure periods. For people born after 1921, there are not even census returns to help with constructing families. I have found their children in the indexes to births but without a mother’s maiden surname in the appropriate field; this makes them a little speculative but they fit very well.

I only know of one child of this couple and that is Gordon Neil born 1957. Some of this I know of personally from an exchange of emails I had with his son, Matthew James Neil. Looking for Gordon’s birth I came across three possible index entries on Scotland’s People but none of these has an online image available. Oddly enough, although no mother’s maiden surname is visible on the search returns on Scotland’s People, when I put in McLean as a mother’s MS, it returned just one of the three possibilities which suggests to me that there may be some hidden data that doesn’t make it to the front end of the search form which is very interesting. I did a further search and found some other possible children including James Neil born in RD Provan in 1955 and Anna Marie Neil born in RD Tradeston in 1959; neither of these had maiden surnames for the mother but they fit well into a sequence. I have not added them to my genealogy yet because it is a bit uncertain.

More About James McCue Neil, Gordon Neil and Matt Neil

From information provided to me by Matt Neil and a little bit of information on my own part I have found the following information. Gordon Neil (Matt’s father) married Linda Ann Bruton in 1986. She was born 28 Jan 1956 in Glasgow. For some reason Matt called her Linda Fee Brueton and this is reflected on an Ancestry page. At first I though that this might have been as a result of a prior marriage but I could not find one. I do not know if Matt’s parents are still alive; I did find a death in 2019 for a Linda Neil who was aged 62 who died in Falkirk and she had a mother’s maiden name of Dewar but perhaps this is wrong and she is still alive. Going back to Matt’s grandfather, James McCue Neil, his wife, Martha Mary McLean died 11 Dec 1992 aged 58. I found a death for James in 2016.

Here we find the Barret’s still living at 12 Goosedubs.  Patrick is aged 47 and his wife, Bridget, is aged 40. Their daughter, Ann, who we saw at the 1841 Census is no longer in the household; she married John Judge at St Andrew’s Chapel on 2 October 1855 and had her own household at this point. Michael is the oldest of the children in the household; 18-years old and a “drain labourer” like his father. There are new children since the 1851 Census – Mary (9), Richard (7) and Bridget (5). All of them were born in Glasgow and all are scholars.

Patrick seems to have aged 13 years between censuses, not ten. Bridget is recorded with her maiden name rather than her husband’s name. He is now said to be 60 and she is 50. They have moved to 19 Margaret’s Place which isn’t too far from where they were at the 1861 Census and is still on the north side of the river. The children have grown up; Michael is now a 28-year-old labourer, still unmarried; Mary and Bridget both work as “reelers”; Mary is 18, Bridget is 14. Richard is aged 16 and is a “callenderer”

The next we hear of Bridget is when she marries in 1880

There are quite a few changes in the family at this census. The family now live at 201 Rutherglen Road, Glasgow. Patrick is mysteriously 80-years-old now (sic) and is a “roadsman”. His wife, Bridget is 61. Their eldest son, Michael, is still unmarried aged 33 (sic) and is a labourer in a boatyard. Their daughter, Mary, is said to be a 36-year-old charwoman and a widow. As we will see, she had married James McKinney in 1874 and they had three children, two of which, Bridget (6) and Mary (8) are also in the household described as granddaughters. Their surname (and their mother’s) is recorded as McKenna not McKinney. The next child is Richard who is now a 25-year-old, unmarried, clothlapper. The remaining two people are Patrick and Bridget’s other daughter, Bridget, and her husband, Edward Conroy; here they are recorded as Kinroy. Bridget is a 26-year-old cotton millworker and her husband, also 26-year-old, is a Hammerman. This rounds off the household. Obviously quite a lot has happened to the family between the 1871 and 1881 Censuses

I have been unable to find any more documentary evidence of either Bridget or Edward Conroy. However, it is interesting that at the 1891 Census, both of their children are living with their maternal grandparents, Patrick Barrett and Bridget Haggerty at 64 Rose Street but there is no sign of their parents.

Both Bridget’s parents are still alive; her father, Patrick, is now said to be 70-years-old (a correction to the obviously wrong age stated at the previous census) and Bridget’s mother, also Bridget, is now aged 64. Of their children, Ann had married John Judge in 1855 and at this census was living with their family at 18 South Shamrock Street, Hutchesontown. Michael, the next child, is still unmarried at 48 and he is a “holder on shipyard”. Richard, is also still unmarried and is a 34-year-old “calenderman” Also in the household are Bridget McKinney “granddaughter” aged 16 who is a “tobacco worker”; she is the daughter of Bridget’s sister, Mary, who married James McKinney. Also in the household are the two children we know of born to Bridget and Edward Conroy; Catherine Conroy, a 9-year-old scholar and Michel Conroy, aged 7. They are described as granddaughter and grandson but I have not been able to uncover any more documentary evidence of them. I have looked at deaths, marriages and census returns, but to no avail. As I came to a bit of a dead end here, I decided not to pursue this couple any further.

Summary of the Children of Patrick Barrett and Bridget Haggerty

This is all I know at present about the children on Patrick Barrett and Bridget Haggerty. The above was really meant as a bit of background to the Barrett family, Patrick and Bridget’s son, Richard, had one son and four daughters (see above) and one of those daughters, Marion McMillan Barrett, married my grandfather, Timothy Chrystal Neil’s brother, Charles Neil. It is perhaps a bit too much of a deep dive for casual readers of this site but there is a bit more. In the course of this research I dipped in to what happened to the children of the children of Patrick Barrett and Bridget Haggerty. Some bits information came more readily that other other bits so some of these grandchildren are detailed a little bit and some, not at all. I made a sub-page of this site just out of complete-ism and you can find out about these grandchildren here if you are interested.
