The Hubeners – The Family of Albertina Hubener
Archibald Neil Before Marriage
I do not know anything about the birth of Archibald Neil. There are no likely Archibald Neil’s in the register of births or baptisms; it is possible that he was not born as a Neil at all and adopted that name when he, himself, was adopted. Interestingly there is an Archibald McKenna born in 1917 in Govanhill and his mother’s maiden name was Cassidy but that might be a stretch. There is a lot more that could be done to research this birth. Ordering a paper certificate might clear up some of the questions about Archibald – or not!
The first knowledge of Archibald that I have is at the 1921 Census when he is said to be aged five years and three months and he is a scholar and lives with his parents, John and Mary, at 68 Main Street, Calton, Glasgow. I have no further information on Archibald unti his marraige in 1937

Here we find Archibald as a 21 year-old bachelor, a housepainter journeyman who lives at 9 Pitcairn Street, Shettleston where he and his adoptive father and mother lived at the 1921 Census. Albertina is the daughter of Albert Hubner an iron roof erector and Margaret Hubner ms Docherty – she is deceased. Margaret is described as a 19 year-old spinster; she lists no occupation. The winesses were Patrick and Mary Boyle. of 189 Springfield Road, Glasgow.
I also found this event recorded in the marriage register for St Mark’s Catholic Church, Carntyne, Diocese of Glasgow (It seems boundary changed made it Carntyne but at was originally in Shettleston)

Some Background on the Family of Albertina Hubener
I did a little bit of research on the Hubner’s and found the birth of Albertina Hubner

Here we find that at this earlier stage in Albert Hubener’s life he is already an iron roof erector as he was when his daughter, Albertina, married Archibald Neil in 1937. Albertina’s mother is named as Margaret Docherty and the birth is an illegitimate one. That did not prevent a baptising of the child a month later.

I also found a sister for Albertina – Margaret, who was born two years after Albertina.

Here we The Hubeners still living at 19 Portland Place. Albert Hubener is still an iron roof erector and his wife, Margaret, is said to be a laundryworker. This birth also looks to be illegitimate as the mother’s name is given as Margaret Docherty not “Hubener ms Docherty”. Unlike Albertina’s registration which specifically records the birth as illegitimate, this one only infers it.
We find the two children and their parents a year later at the 1921 Census when they were still living at 19 Portland Street, St Rollox, Glasgow

We find out some interesting details about Albertina’s father, Albert Hubner (or Hubener as it says here). He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA around 1882. He is now aged 38 years and nine months and is a steel roofing erector working for Redpath Brown & Co, Building Contactors. His wife, Margaret, is a bit younger at 30 years and 3 months. We see them with their two children, Albertina, aged 3 and Margaret aged 1.
I say his wife, because Margaret is recorded as such in this census return, but was she ever really married to Albert Hubener? I have been unable to find a marriage for them. I eventually found a death registration for Albert (see below) that says he was married twice but neither of these was to Margaret Docherty. This is made more complicated by the fact that we find Albert Hubener marrying Elizabeth Galloway in 1935 where he describes himself as a widower. This is because Margaret Hubener or Docherty died

This record clearly states that Margaret Hubener is the wife of Albert Hubener and he is the informat at the registration of the death. He is described as “husband, widower”. However, I have not found a marriage for them and even if they were never married Albert may still have claimed that they were for official purposes. The family home seems to have been 184 Gallowgate, Glasgow. Margaret died of pulmonary tuberculosis. We next hear of Albert six years later when he marries Elizabeth Galloway or Wallace.

Here we find that Albert and Elizabeth are both said to live at 25 Methven Street, Glasgow (although they were married at 94 Drumover Drive, Glasgow) He is a 50 year-old widower and she is a rather younger widow at just 35. Elizabeth Galloway had married a Wallace and when I searched the index to marriage registrations I did come across and entry for an Elizabeth Galloway marrying a Thomas Wallace in 1918 (644/3/764 Calton RD). This is a good fit for a first marriage for Elizabeth but a bit tangential to our purposes. There were too many possible deaths for me to locate his with any certainty.
At the point that Albert and Elizabeth mary, and are both said to live at 25 Methven Street, Glasgow, Akberts daughter, Albertina would be seventeen-years-old and Margaret would have been fifteen-years-old. This was probably something of a handful for a 50 year old father to manage on his own. It is noteworthy that his new wife is only thirty-five.
As we saw earlier, few years later in 1937, Albertina married Archibald Neil; she was aged just nineteen then. I could not find a marriage for her sister, Margaret but I have found a death index entry that is likely for her suggesting that she never married.

| HUBNER | MARGARET | 59 | DOCHERTY | F | 1979 | 609 / 880 | Glasgow, Martha St |
Of, course, she would have been aged about nineteen when the Great War started and this reduced massively the number of available male partners and this could have been a factor.
To finish off with Albertina’s parents we get to the death of her father in 1949 when he was aged sixty-six.

There are a number of oddities in this record. He is said to have been married twice; firstly to Margaret Hannah. However, I have failed to find any such marriage. Also, his mother is said to be Mary Hubner ms Green when we know that she was actually Mary Flynn. I have no explanation for these but they may just be mistakes. The informant was his second wife and probably never knew her husband’s mother. My own mother, who was the informant at my father’s death registration, gave the wrong maiden surname of my father’s mother. She said it was Mary Chrystal when it was, in fact, Margaret McDonald. Mary Chrystal was my father’s grandmother’s maiden surname. I think these kinds of mistakes are common when someone is unfamiliar with a spouse’s family as Elizabeth was with Albert’s family and my mother was with my father’s family. A similar thing could be said about the suggested name for Albert’s first wife.
An Elizabeth Hubner is recorded as dying in Glasgow in 1969 aged 68 suggesting that she was born around 1901 which is good for Albert’s second wife.
There is obviously a lot more that could be researched with the Hubeners including Albert’s arrival from America and his parents’ histories. This is, though, just meant to be some general background to the Hubeners. For the sake of completness, however, I repeat the findings of my research into Albertina Hubener and Archibald Neil that are part of the general page on the children of John Neil and Mary Anne Chrystal; Archibald was the adopted son of one of their children, John Neil, who had married Mary McKenna in 1913 but had no children of their own, but adopted Archibald. We saw, above, the marriage of Archibald and Albertina but I could find no children to them either. They divorced in 1965.

I do not know whether Archibald remarried but I do not have any documentation to suggest this. You would think that someone divorces in order to remarry but this is just speculation on my part. Archibald would have been aged about forty-nine at the time of his divorce and Albertina a couple of years younger. I have not found a remarriage for either of them but these entries might be of interest when I have more time to look at this family

I know nothing more about Archibald until his death for which no document is available online but there is an index entry for it. At some point it might be useful to obtain a copy of his death registration.
